Major Survey Works & Activities

The Hydrographic Survey Wing undertakes hydrographic, bathymetric, topographic, and coastal surveys for State and Central Government departments, public sector undertakings, and research institutions across marine, coastal, and inland water bodies.

1. Urban Water Transport & Metro Projects

1. Hydrographic and dredging surveys for Kochi Water Metro Project on behalf of Kerala Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).
2. Surveys for State Water Transport Department (SWTD) along various boat routes and boat jetty areas across Kerala.

2. Ports, Harbours & Navigation Channels

1. Routine bathymetric surveys in ship channels for Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
2. Pre- and post-monsoon surveys and dredging surveys at all harbours under the Harbour Engineering Department.
3. Sub-Bottom Profiling Survey at Beypore Port Wharf for depth enhancement works.
4. Side Scan Sonar Surveys at Muthalapozhy and Beypore channels for Kerala Maritime Board (KMB).

3. Lakshadweep Islands Surveys

1. Hydrographic surveys in coordination with Cochin Port Authority / Lakshadweep Administration at the islands of Kalpeni, Androth, Chetlat, Kiltan, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Agatti, Minicoy, Bitra, Cheriyam, Bangaram, and Thinnakara.

4. Inland Water Bodies & Lakes& Rivers

1. Hydrographic survey study at Sasthamkotta Lake for State Wetland Authority of Kerala (SWAK).
2. Special surveys in Ashtamudi, Vellayani, Kuttiyadi, Kuttayi, and Dalavapuram water bodies for KIIDC.
3. Comprehensive hydrographic surveys for NATPAC at Akkulam–Veli Lake, Kadinamkulam–Azhur, Poothura Canal, Nadayara–Hariharapuram Lake, Paravur Lake, and Kollam Lake.
4. Detailed hydrographic studies being carried out in the Chaliyar, Chalakudy, Vamanapuram, Karamana, and Neyyar Rivers for CWRDM.
5. Comprehensive flood-related hydrographic survey conducted in the Upper Kuttanad region for CWRDM.
6. A detailed bathymetric survey of Vembanad Lake was carried out from Alappuzha to Azhikode for Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS).

5. Coastal Protection & Environmental Studies

1. Detailed surveys at 10 coastal hotspot locations including Alappad, Chellanam, and Kollamkode for KERI.
2. Coastal protection surveys under Coastal Protection Project for PMU – WRD Mission Directorate.
3. High Tide Line (HTL) determination surveys at Chavakkad Taluk, Azhikkode, and Thalassery for the Revenue Department.

6. Topographic Surveys

1. Topographic surveys at Thottappally and Kasaragod regions for Kerala Maritime Board.
2. Topographic surveys at M.G. University Campus and Blessen George Stadium for Sports Kerala Foundation.

7. Desiltation surveys

1. For KIIDC, desiltation surveys are being carried out at Aruvikkara Dam, Vellathooval Dam, Kallarkutty Dam, and Moothikayam Regulator. Through these surveys, the exact quantity of silt deposition in the reservoirs is determined, the existing storage capacity is assessed, and accurate bathymetric data required for scientifically planned desiltation works is collected.
2. As part of various irrigation projects in Kerala, desiltation surveys have been successfully completed at Thenmala Dam – Parappar Dam and at Malampuzha Dam.
3. A Bottom Sampling Survey has also been successfully completed at the Thenmala Dam – Ottakkal Weir section, collecting scientific data on the composition and quality of the bottom sediments.

8. Special Missions & Government Initiatives

1. Surveys in abandoned quarries at Chittikkara, Ilavaramkuzhi, Kavumpallam, Pokkittath, and Vendar as part of the 100-Day Action Programme in coordination with Haritha Kerala Mission.
2. Special hydrographic surveys supporting sustainable development and conservation of Vellayani Lake.
3. Hydrographic surveys for seaplane operations at Mattupetty and Bolgatty.
